WWE: What Are the Rules of an Ambulance Match?

Tonight on Monday Night Raw, Braun Strowman returned and challenged Roman Reigns to an Ambulance Match at Great Balls of Fire. It’s been a while since there has been an Ambulance Match in the WWE, so for those who may have forgotten or who have never seen one before, what exactly are the rules of this match type?

In an Ambulance Match, there are no pinfalls, no submissions, no disqualifications, and no countouts. The absolute only way to win is to force your opponent into an ambulance and close the door. In that way, it’s somewhat similar to a Casket Match or a Dumpster Match in that the main goal is just to place your opponent inside of something. It’s also the exact same kind of match as a Last Ride match; that’s The Undertaker’s variation on it, in which you must place your opponent inside of a hearse instead of an ambulance.

Ambulance Matches have been around for almost two decades, originating in WCW in 2000. In 2003, WWE began using the match type as part of Kane’s feud with Shane McMahon. Like with this current Roman vs. Strowman feud, both Kane and McMahon had been putting one another in the hospital, and so an Ambulance Match became thematically appropriate. Kane ended up defeating McMahon in an Ambulance Match at Survivor Series.

Another notable Ambulance Match came as part of Elimination Chamber 2012, during which Kane faced off against John Cena. The most recent Ambulance Match was between Bray Wyatt and Dean Ambrose on an episode of Monday Night Raw in January 2015. There was, however, a Dumpster Match earlier this year in which Strowman faced Kalisto on Raw.

Ambulances have been a major part of Braun Strowman’s feud with Roman Reigns, most notably when Strowman lifted up an ambulance with Reigns inside it earlier this year. But the two have also had a number of other notable encounters surrounding ambulances, and they both sent one another to the hospital, with Strowman most recently spending a few weeks away due to an injury at the hands of Roman. However, now Strowman is back, and he and Roman will fight in this Ambulance Match at Great Balls of Fire on July 9th.
