Willie Cory Godbolt is going on a shooting rampage through multiple homes in Mississippi, leaving eight people dead, including a deputy sheriff.

The suspect is sometimes known simply as Cory Godbolt.

It’s not yet clear whether Godbolt knew the victims of the shootings, which occurred in three different homes, according to Fox News. At one point, he’s accused of holding a 16-year-old boy hostage.

Godbolt is in custody.

1. He Allegedly Told a Mississippi Reporter He Committed the Murders Because He ‘Loves His Wife’

The Clarion-Ledger newspaper in Mississippi obtained photos of authorities arresting Godbolt, and a reporter managed to talk to the suspect about the crimes.

“He told The Clarion-Ledger reporter he did it because he loved his wife and children and he loves Bogue Chitto,” The Clarion-Ledger reported.

Bogue Chitto is an unincorporated village in Mississippi. Godbolt, 35, is from Bogue Chitto.


2. Godbolt Allegedly Said He Wasn’t ‘Fit to Live’

Godbolt had gone to a home to “talk about his children,” and neighbors called police, according to The Clarion-Ledger.

That’s when the carnage started. “…somebody called the officer…. that’s what they do, they intervene. It cost him his life. I’m sorry,” he said to The Clarion-Ledger, adding, “Suicide by cop was my intention. I ain’t fit to live. Not after what I’ve done.”


3. Godbolt Has a Previous Criminal History

Godbolt is no stranger to the law.

According to Fox News, he has a previous criminal history, including armed robbery and aggravated assault, simple assault, disorderly conduct/breach of piece.

In the armed robbery case, he was accused of striking a man with a pistol and stealing cash and jewelry, Fox reported.


4. The Shootings Took Place in Three Different Homes

Details of the murders were still coming in. But it appears that the first shooting erupted at the home where Godbolt had gone to talk about his children.

Someone called police to ask for him to be removed and gunfire broke out, according to The Daily Leader.

The sheriff “said the deputy and three others were killed there. Two more people were shot and killed at a residence on Coopertown Road,” The Daily Leader reported. “A third crime scene was located near where Godbolt was captured, according to reports.”

The newspaper reported that he was talking to his wife and members of her family initially.


5. The Governor Released a Statement ‘Praying for Those Lost’

Phil Bryant, the governor of Mississippi, released a statement praying for those who were lost. He mentioned the sacrifice of the deputy sheriff.

The victims names have not yet been released.

“I ask all Mississippians to join Deborah and me in praying for those lost in Lincoln County,” he said on Facebook. “Every day, the men and women who wear the badge make some measure of sacrifice to protect and serve their communities. Too often, we lose one of our finest. I thank the law enforcement agencies involved for their hard work. May the peace of the Almighty wash over those hurting after this senseless tragedy.”
