A trailer for the long-awaited Superman prequel series Krypton finally surfaced online today, confirming that it will air on Syfy at some point in 2017. The network didn’t give a specific date for when we will finally see the first episode of the project that has been in the works since 2014.
Before you say, “Haven’t we already had a Superman prequel series,” Krypton is nothing like Smallville. The series centers on Superman’s grandfather, Seg-El.
Although the character was featured in the comics, he was much older. In the series, he’ll only be in his 20s, notes TVLine and is played by Cameron Cuffe. Syfy says the show “will follow Superman’s grandfather – whose House of El was ostracized and shamed – as he fights to redeem his family’s honor and save his beloved world from chaos.”
Other members of the cast include Georgina Campbell as Lyta Zod; Ian McElhinney as Val-El; Elliot Cowan as Daron-Vex; Ann Ogbomo as Alura Zod; Rasmus Hardiker as Kem; Wallis Day as Nyssa-Vex; and Aaron Pierre as Dev-Em.
Krypton also appears to be part of the DC Comics Extended movie universe that started with 2013’s Man of Steel. David S. Goyer, who wrote that film and co-wrote Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, developed Krypton with Damian Kindler (Stargate SG-1, Sleepy Hollow) and has clearly integrated the S-shield design from Man of Steel.
Goyer told ComicBook.com back in 2015 that Krypton is set 200 years before Man of Steel. “We’re treating Krypton like it’s a historical piece. We look to previous cultures on Earth to model what that would be like,” he said.
Syfy still hasn’t said when Kypton will debut this year. The trailer also showed up online mysteriously, first hitting Vimeo before reaching YouTube.
Krypton won’t be the only series based on characters created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster. The CW also has Supergirl, which is now in its second season. Other live-action DC Comics shows currently on air include Arrow, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow and Gotham.
