HOST: Film-maker Oliver Stone

When hearing that there has been criticism about the four-part documentary, Stone’s response to The Guardian was that:

You work very hard on a movie and sometimes it’s judged more by the person who made it than by what the content is. I can say I’m a black man in that way. It’s not the content, it’s not the content of my character, but it’s the nature of my probing.

The Daily Beast has referred to the project as a “wildly irresponsible love letter” to the Russian President, while the NY Times reviewed it as this:

Mr. Putin … plays the tough-but-fair leader, beset by the calumny of hypocritical Westerners. The cult of Putin is very much about physicality, and there’s plenty on display: He suits up for a hockey scrimmage, does strength-training workouts, talks martial arts. In the interviews, Mr. Putin has the casual charm of an executive who knows that he could always press a button and release the hounds … Mr. Stone gives Mr. Putin a platform for flattering versions of his government’s aggression in Ukraine; treatment of opposition parties; and the sheltering of Edward J. Snowden, the National Security Agency whistle-blower.

One issue that many are curious about are reports of Russian hackers involved in the 2016 Presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. When asked about these reports in The Putin Interviews, Putin stated:

Certainly we liked [the idea of] President Trump, and we still like him because he publicly announced that he was ready to restore American-Russian relations … We did not hack the election at all.

Tune in tonight to see part 1 of the four-part documentary.
