Iowa Congressman Steve King on Twitter today celebrated the deportation of Juan Manuel Montes, a “DREAMer” who was brought to the United States as a child.
King posted a photo of a beer on Twitter, saying “Border patrol, this one’s for you.”
King then linked to a USA Today story, which describes the fact that 23-year-old Juan Manuel Montes was recently deported to Mexico. Montes had been brought to the United States when he was 9 years old, and he had been protected from deportation from President Barack Obama’s Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA).
This makes Montes the first undocumented immigrant protected under DACA to be deported during the Trump administration.
“Some people told me that they were going to deport me; others said nothing would happen,” Montes told the USA Today. “I thought that if I kept my nose clean nothing would happen.” He asked that the exact location of their home be withheld.
President Donald Trump has suggested that he will protect those undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children.
“We’re gonna show great heart,” Trump said during a news conference in February. “DACA is a very, very difficult subject for me, I will tell you. To me, it’s one of the most difficult subjects I have because you have these incredible kids…I love these kids. I love kids. I have kids and grandkids. And I find it very, very hard doing what the law says exactly to do, and, you know, the law is rough.”
This is not the first time that Steve King has generated controversy due to a tweet. Last month, King said in regards to immigration, “We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies.” He was roundly criticized for the statement but did not apologize for it and in fact doubled down on it in the subsequent days.
Wilders understands that culture and demographics are our destiny. We can’t restore our civilization with somebody else’s babies. https://t.co/4nxLipafWO
