Here’s everything you need to know.

1. All-Star Cast From the Shows and Movies Demoed the Game

For the E3 2016 reveal trailer for the game, Publisher Ubisoft got together LeVar Burton of Star Trek: The Next Generation, Karl Urban of Star Trek Beyond, and Jeri Ryan of Star Trek: Voyager to try out the game. They got a shot of everybody’s reactions and hot takes of the game, with many of them pleased with the technology of virtual reality in bringing the Star Trek universe to life.

“If I could have imagined what I would have wanted the Star Trek VR game to be, this is it,” said Burton. “This is what we’ve been waiting for.”

2. You’ll Choose From a Number of Roles on the Ship

Piloting the Starship Enterprise and other spacecraft requires that characters work together, and you’ll be able to pick from one of four roles to support the ship.

The Helmsman controls the movement of the ship, doing everything from local travel to warp travel. They also have to manage the ship’s position in combat and avoid hazardous objects in space. Tactical controls the ship’s combat capabilities and targets specific enemies and certain parts of their ships. The Engineer controls the ship’s power and allocates limited power sources to certain sections to boost their strength. They also need to keep the systems repaired and working. Finally there’s the Captain who knows the objective and coordinates other players and strategies to meet those objectives. The other crew members look to the Captain for directions, such as whether or not to save an escape pod full of people while under fire.

Sometimes roles will have to share some duties. The System Intrusion function for hacking enemy ships can be used by Tactical, Helm, or Engineering so you can divvy up the task based on who’s busiest.

3. You’ll Pilot the Starship Enterprise and More

Ubisoft took great lengths to bring the Sparship Enterprise to life. They met with James Cawley in Ticonderoga, New York, who over the course of 15 years with the help of Star Trek alumni and other craftsmen built a recreation of the set for the Enterprise as it looked in the original 1966 TV show. Ubisoft based the layout of the Enterprise as it looks in the game from the set. They didn’t want to add labels and monitors to the consoles of the Enterprise where there were none, so they have pop-up labels across the buttons to ensure that players can pilot the ship efficiently.

Players can also pilot the Starship Aegis, which is more user-friendly than the Enterprise making it best for new players.
