Last season, the Rockets were second in the NBA in points per game (115.3), first in three-pointers made (14.4), first in three-pointers attempted (40.3) and second in offensive rating (111.8 points per 100 possessions. Then, they went out and added Chris Paul, one of the NBA’s best passers who also shot a career-high 41.1 percent from long distance last year.
Many question how Paul and James Harden will co-exist in the same backcourt, but ultimately it’s two high-IQ players and willing passers inside of Mike D’Antoni’s ultra up-tempo offense that caters to both their styles. If things go right, this team could potentially put up 120 points per game.
Of course, their first game of the season will also likely be the most difficult test of the year, as they have to go on the road against the Warriors, who are looking to cement themselves as one of the best teams of all-time. For all the offensive weapons the Dubs have, they also finished second in the NBA last year in defensive rating (101.1 points allowed per 100 possessions).
This could easily turn into a shootout–the over/under is set at a whopping 229–but Houston’s new backcourt against Golden State’s elite defense may be the most compelling aspect of Tuesday night’s opener.
