Rep. Steve Scalise of Louisiana was reportedly shot in the hip after a gunman opened fire at a baseball practice involving GOP members of Congress on June 14. He is expected to survive the incident, but was rushed to a hospital where emergency surgery was performed.
Scalise’s office released a statement shortly after the matter, indicating that he remains in “good spirits.”
Scalise, a Republican, is the Majority Whip in the U.S. House of Representatives for Louisiana’s 1st congressional district. He’s held the seat wince 2008 and was once the chairman of the conservative House Republican Study Committee.
Before serving in the House, Scalise spent time working in Louisiana’s State Senate and the state’s House of Representatives.
In 2014, Scalise was elected by his colleagues to serve as the Majority Whip.
Scalise was born in New Orleans and is one of three children. He has a brother named Glenn and a sister named Tara. He earned his bachelor’s degree with a major in computer programming and a minor in political science at Louisiana State University.

1. Scalise & His Wife Have 2 Children Together
Scalise is married to Jennifer Letulle, and the couple have two children together: a daughter named Madison and a son named Harrison.
On social media, Scalise often posted about the love for his children. Harrison is a member of the Cub Scouts, an honor his father was consistently thrilled about, according to his social media posts.
Harrison’s birthday is May 8, which last year coincided with Mother’s Day. Scalise posted a photo to Twitter of the celebration.
Madison’s birthday is in March, and Scalise enlisted President Donald Trump to help wish her a happy birthday a few months ago in a message to Twitter. Trump told Madison to “listen to her father” because he is a “very powerful man.”
2. Scalise & His Wife Have Been Married for Over 10 Years
Scalise and his wife Jennifer got married April 9, 2005 at historic St. Louis Cathedral in New Orleans, records show.
The two tied the knot with a large reception that followed at nearby Gallier Hall. Soon after, they went on a honeymoon to Europe.
Jennifer graduated from Andrew Jackson Fundamental Magnet High School and then held a job at Ses Inc. at the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Command.
3. Scalise’s Mother Died in 1999
Scalise’s mother Carol Schilleci-Scalise died in 199 at the age of 59.
An obituary from Jefferson Parish called her “an inspiring, compassionate, and hardworking community leader whose leadership was felt by many citizens in a variety of ways.” She was a board member of the Jefferson Council on Aging where the mission was to help seniors of the parish with being independent.
Carol remained dedicated to helping senior citizens and was a member of the American Society on Aging, where she tried to enhance the knowledge and skills of people who work with the older generation. In addition, she was also a member of the Louisiana Aging Network Association where she worked to keep seniors in their homes for as long as possible.
One year after her death, the Jefferson Parish Coroner’s Office dedicated the mental helth wing as the “Carol Scalise Mental Health Pavilion.”
She was so prominent in the community that an award started being given out in her name one year after her death. The “Carol Scalise Award” was presented to a resident of the parish that “has supported the senior population by actively volunteering in senior-to-senior outreach programs.”
4. Scalise’s Father Died in 2015 & Was a Real Estate Agent
Steve’s father, Alfred J. Scalise, was a commercial realtor for over 50 years. According to his obituary, he died after a battle with cancer inside his home on October 8, 2015. He was 77-years old when he died, The Advocate in Baton Rouge reported.
Alfred was a native of New Orleans and worked in the restaurant industry in Florida before he moved to the New Orleans area, the newspaper reported. He started as a realtor by selling properties for Keller Williams Realty.
5. Scalise’s Stepmother Works as a Business Manager
Alfred remarried to Maggie Penfold and worked as a business manager at Blue Ox Environmental Planning Services, LLC., her LinkedIn said.
The business, located in Lafayette, assists the private industry with environmental regulations that may impact their business operations. Before that, she worked for 18 years as a business manager for Lake Pontchartrain Basin Foundation in New Orleans.
The foundation’s goal was to address environmental concerns throughout the basin.
