The second season of Fox‘s Lucifer ended tonight. So you might be wondering if Lucifer Morningstar will be staying in Los Angeles for another year. The show has been renewed for a third season, which will debut in Fall 2017.

Although Fox hasn’t announced the exact premiere dates for 2017-2018 TV season, the network has given Lucifer a fall launch. It will still air on Mondays, but will move up to 8 p.m. ET. It will be paired with The Gifted, a series set in Marvel’s X-Men universe.

Lucifer is based on a character from DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint. He was created by Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth and Mike Dringenberg for The Sandman, and was later given his own series written by Mike Carey. Tom Kapinos (Californication) developed the project for TV. It stars Tom Ellis as Lucifer Morningstar, the Devil, who has given up his throne in Hell to live the carefree lifestyle of a Los Angeles club owner. He becomes involved with Los Angeles Police Department Detective Chloe Decker (Lauren German), who is somehow immune to his charms.

The rest of the cast includes D.B. Woodside as Lucifer’s older brother Amendadiel, Kevin Alejandro as Detective Daniel Espinoza, Lesly-Ann Brandt as Lucifer’s ally Mazikeen, Rachel Harris as Dr. Linda Martin, Tricia Helfer as Lucifer’s mom Charlotte Richards, and Aimee Garcia as forensic scientist Aimee Garcia.

Fox decided to renew Lucifer for season three very early, picking the show up way back in February. A month later, Deadline reported that Fox made an interesting decision regarding season two. The last four episodes of season two will actually be part of season three, which will still consist of 22 newly created episodes. That means season three will run a whopping 26 episodes!

The move was endorsed by executive producer Joe Henderson, who wrote on Twitter that they conceived season two as an 18-episode season. He wrote that the four new episodes “stand on their own, but also pick up plots we’ve introduced and bring in new stuff we’ll play with season 3.”

The ratings for Lucifer haven’t been that terrible for a Fox show. TVSeriesFinale notes that the show averaged 3.675 million viewers, off 19.45 percent from season one. It also averaged a 1.05 18-49 rating. Weirdly, Lucifer is averaging more viewers than Gotham, which has averaged just 3.350 million viewers.
