While his administration deals with ongoing scandals, President Donald Trump will try to keep traditions alive with an appearance at Arlington National Cemetery on Memorial Day. As presidents have done in the past, he will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier and give brief remarks. You can watch the entire speech above. The wreath-laying ceremony is scheduled to begin at 10:55 a.m. ET.
This is Trump’s first public appearance since arriving home from his first overseas trip as president. That trip ended with a a speech to military personnel at Naval Air Station Sigonella in Sicily. Trump visited Italy for the G7 summit, where his counterparts held press conferences. Trump skipped that, instead opting to speak to talk with soldiers and their families. First Lady Melania Trump also spoke.
“I think we hit a home run no matter where we went,” Trump said during the speech. “And now we’re getting on that very big plane and heading back to Washington. I can think of no better way to conclude our first foreign trip than to spend time with you. … We will always support you. And we will never, ever forget you.”
Before the G7 summit, Trump met other world leaders in Saudi Arabia, Israel, the Vatican and Brussels.
The trip might have been a break for Trump personally from the chaos of Washington, but that didn’t stop new developments in the Russia investigation from breaking. On Sunday, Trump tweeted critiques of the “fake news media” after The Washington Post and NBC News reported that Trump’s son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner is now a “focus” in the Russia investigation, although the reports stress that investigators do not suspect him of a crime.
Kushner became a “focus” because of a December meeting with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and another meeting with Russian banker Sergey Gorkov.
“Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about these meetings,” his lawyer, Jamie Gorelick, told NBC News. “He will do the same if he is contacted in connection with any other inquiry.”
Today, sources told NBC News that Kushner has been told to “lay low” because of the reports.
“Jared is doing a great job for the country,” Trump told the New York Times. “I have total confidence in him. He is respected by virtually everyone and is working on programs that will save our country billions of dollars. In addition to that, and perhaps more importantly, he is a very good person.”
