Kevin Spacey has been acting on screen since 1986, with his first role being in the Meryl Streep film Heartburn. He originally pursued a career in stand up comedy, but when that didn’t go particularly well, he studied acting and began performing on stage. He also in the 1980s made a guest appearance in the TV series Crime Story, and he appeared in nine episodes of the CBS series Wiseguy.

Through the late 1980s and into the 1990s, Kevin Spacey became known as a character actor, eventually landing the role of Keyser Söze in The Usual Suspects. It was this performance that earned Spacey the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. The same year as The Usual Suspects, Spacey won praise from critics for his performance in the thriller Seven. In 1999, Spacey starred in American Beauty, and this earned him the Best Actor award at the Academy Awards.

For the role of Frank Underwood on House of Cards, Spacey has been nominated for a number of awards, and in 2013 he won Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series at the Emmys. He also won a Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Television Series Drama.
