It’s Flag Day 2017– a day that honors the adoption of the flag of the United States of America.

On June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress came to a resolution, “that the flag of the United States be thirteen stripes, alternate red and white; that the union be thirteen stars, white in a blue field representing a new constellation.” The precise origins of the holiday are unclear– according to the Department of Veteran’s Affairs, the first official observance claim came from Hartford, Connecticut, in the 1860s. Perhaps a more notorious claim comes from New York in 1889, when the principal of a kindergarten in NYC held school ceremonies that recognized Flag Day.
