There are a lot of big titles that are set to appear during this year’s E3, however, one of the most notable was during EA’s press conference. Announced back in April of this year, Star Wars: Battlefront II is a multiplayer-focused shooter that allows users to play as the various troops and heroes throughout the Star Wars universe. This includes not only the original three movies, but the current ones and often disregarded prequels.
Up until today, information has been rather limited outside of a gameplay trailer, some basic info on the main campaign, and the pre-order bonuses. Thankfully, this changed today as players got an in-depth look at not only how the game would play, but entire matches courtesy of the Assault on Theed stream.
Here’s what you need to know about Star Wars: Battlefront II today:
1. Heroes Have Been Rebalanced and New Ones Are Coming
Heroes allow players cause havoc on the battlefield via taking control of famous characters such as Darth Maul, Boba Fett, and Luke Skywalker. One of the most notable changes is that lightsaber-wielding heroes’ damage has been reduced against basic troops. This is to help balance these characters and make them way less dominate on the battlefield. We also know that the lightsaber combat is far more fluid than the original, which had characters mainly lunging at each other wildly.
We also know that two new characters, Jinn and Captain Phasma, will be joining the roster later in the year. This will no doubt be aimed to release sometime around The Last Jedi’s release in December. During the live stream we got a chance to see Rey, who has the ability to disorientate enemies with her force powers. Darth Maul, on the other hand, is an absolutely devastating close quarters fighter who can lunge towards enemies quickly.
2. New Battle Point System Introduced
One of the most intriguing additions to Star Wars: Battlefront II is a Battle Point system that allows players to earn rewards as they participate in matches. Instead of finding tokens on the battlefield like in the original Battlefront, users are able to earn these points to spend on vehicles that they can then directly access in-game. This eliminates players camping vehicle spawns and allows users to have a more fluid experience. However, Battle Points can be spent on other items like buffs and special units like the B-2 Super Battle Droids for the Separatist army.
Additionally, this new system is how players will access the various heroes in each level. The way players earn Battle Points is through assists and playing the objective, which is a big focus of Star Wars: Battlefront II. This system is clearly designed to motivate teamwork, which was largely missing from the first Star Wars: Battlefront.
3. Classes Have Made a Return
DICE have also decided to introduce a class system, which was wildly popular during the original series run. While every class was not revealed during the gameplay, we did get to see multiple types of units and their various abilities. Some soldiers of note include the Officer, which allows players to buff allies around them. This is Battlefront II’s version of a support class and should be used in conjunction with large groups of other units. Another unit we got to look at was the Jump Jet Trooper which features a jetpack that allows them to be far more mobile on the battlefield.
Specialists are the snipers of Battlefront II, who can lay trip mines behind them to ensure their back is covered when aiming down the sights. Heavy units can produce combat shields that can soak up a lot of damage and allow for pushes into the enemy defenses. Finally, the Assault class is the most basic unit and will serve as the most well-rounded unit available to players. Their special ability lets them equip a powerful shotgun that is fantastic for breaking through enemy lines.
4. There Are New Land and Air Vehicles
Developer DICE have always been known for their dynamic vehicle combat, so it’s no surprise that Star Wars: Battlefront II is sporting an impressive roster of starships and tanks. Shown off in length during the gameplay stream, we got a chance to see multiple types of armored death machines and what they excel at. While there is certainly more, here are all the vehicles we got to see during the Assault on Theed:
- Vulture Droid – Air
- V-Wing – Air
- Naboo Starfighter – Air
- AAT – Land
- AT-RT – Land
While the fighters seemed fairly straight forward, the AAT actually features a “Siege Mode” that allows users to hammer areas with the main cannon. Doing so immobilizes the tank to allow your opponents a chance to disable and destroy you. In contrast, the AT-RTs are nimble two-legged walkers that employee more hit and run tactics. They also sport an Ion Charge that deals extra damage to vehicles, however, players are almost always exposed to damage while using these vehicles.
5. Galactic Assault Mode Is Comprised of Three Phases
The new game mode that was shown off during the Star Wars: Battlefront II stream is called Galactic Assault. This three phase mode started out with the Separatist Army escorting an MTT (Multi-Troop Transport) to a designated spot before the Republic forces could destroy it. This acted like the Walker Assault game type from the first game, as the MTT sported a rather hefty health bar at the top of each character’s HUD.
If the escort is successful, players then moved into the central palace where they had to fight for various control points, with the match ending in a brawl for the throne room. The attacking army has only a certain number of troops for this assault, meaning if the clone army can hold them off till that number reaches 0 then they win.
