Celtics-Sixers Trade: What Picks & Players Were Traded?

29

After a day full of trade buzz, The Vertical’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported the Celtics and 76ers have agreed to a trade for the number one pick in the NBA draft. The teams will swap the first and third picks, but the remaining parts of the trade is more complicated. The Vertical reports the Celtics will receive either a 2018 or 2019 first round pick from the Sixers.

The Vertical reports the deal will not be called in to the league office until Monday, but has been agreed to in principle. Here’s what we know so far. Wojnarowski sent out a series of tweets detailing the specifics.

So far, the trade does not appear to involve any players. If players were added to the deal, the salaries would have to work within the salary cap.

To summarize, the Celtics are receiving an additional first round pick plus the third pick in 2017. It becomes a two-for-one pick swap unless anything else is added.

Celtics Receive: 2017 No. 3 Pick, 2018 First Round Pick (via Lakers- Protected No. 2-5) OR 2019 First Round Pick (via Kings)
Sixers Receive: 2017 No. 1 Pick

The Vertical reported the Lakers pick will be protected for picks two through five. If the pick is not conveyed to the Celtics in 2018, the Sixers will send the Kings pick in 2019.

Assuming the protections do not kick in next year, the Celtics will have three first round picks in 2018. In addition to their own pick, Boston will have picks from the Nets and Lakers.

The Sixers will still have their own pick in 2018 as they will be sending the Lakers pick they are owed to Boston (if it is not picks 2-5). According to Real GM, the Celtics could have as many as four first round picks in 2019 if they do not receive a pick from the Sixers next season. Picks from the Clippers and Grizzlies will be in play, but both picks have protections.
