The Brooklyn Nine-Nine team was made to wait when it came to the future of their precinct and fans were forced to wait to learn the future of the show. Thankfully, ahead of tonight’s season four finale, the show was renewed for a second season. The police sitcom, which stars Andy Samberg, will be back for a fifth season in fall 2017.

Fox waited until May 12 to finally renew the show for next season. It’s easy to see why Fox might have been apprehensive about bringing it back. The live ratings for the show were not good at all.

TVSeriesFinale notes that the fourth season averaged just 2.156 million viewers and a 0.88 rating in the 18-49 demographic. Both numbers were down significantly from the previous year. The total viewership was off 21.12 percent from season three, while the average rating was down 27.31 percent. Fox has been airing two episodes a night since Tuesday, May 9.

The final two episodes of season four are called “The Bank Job” and “Crime & Punishment.” In the first episode, Jake and Rosa keep their search for a group of bank robbers going with their idol, Lt. Hawkins (guest star Gina Gershon). They end up finding a strange secret. In “Crime & Punishment,” Jake and Rosa are framed for a crime and the rest of the team has to prove their innocence.

“An undercover mission goes south, causing Jake and Rosa’s entire worlds to come crumbling down around them,” co-creator Dan Goor told Entertainment Weekly. “It puts their careers and lives in jeopardy. Serious jeopardy.”

Brooklyn Nine-Nine was created by Parks & Recreation co-creator Michael Schur and Parks & Rec writer Dan Goor. It stars Samberg as Jake Peralta, Stephanie Beatriz as Rosa Diaz, Terry Crews as Terry Jeffords, Joe Lo Truglio as Charles Boyle, Melissa Fumero as Amy Santiago, Chelsea Peretti as Gina Linetti, Andre Braugher as Captain Ray Holt, Dirk Blocker as Hitchcock and Joel McKinnon Miller as Scully.

In 2014, the show surprisingly won Golden Globes for Best Comedy/Musical and for Samberg’s lead role. That year, Noman Howell won an Emmy for his stunt coordination. Braugher remains the only castmember nominated for an Emmy, as he’s been up for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for three consecutive years and still hasn’t won.
