Steal Mireille Enos’s Office Style from The Catch

If you’re like us, you’ve been following the fashion on Shonda Rhimes’s new drama The Catch as closely as its twisting, turning plot. Mireille Enos’s inspired work wardrobe on the show goes far beyond boring office attire: Pencil skirts perk up with lace details, unexpected color pairings complement instead of clash, and ’60s-esque minidresses feel fresh with modern prints and minimal accessories.

“She’s probably the best dressed P.I.,” costume designer Peggy Schnitzer laughs, describing Enos’s character Alice Vaughan’s style as strong, sexy, and sleek, with a touch of fun. “She’s all business when she’s working, but when you see her with her counterpart there’s an ability to be sexy and feminine and flirtatious as well.”

Schnitzer took inspiration from iconic women of the 1960s and ’70s when building Enos’s wardrobe, citing The Thomas Crown Affair and Alfred Hitchcock’s classic films as references. Mixing modern silhouettes with retro styles, and utilizing a variety of high-low pieces, Schnitzer gives us nothing but envy each week on The Catch. So naturally, we asked her for an exclusive sneak peek at Enos’s versatile looks in tonight’s episode. Warning: If you’re as good of an investigator as Alice Vaughan, you may discover her wardrobe reveals secrets from this game-changing episode, too.

Every girl needs a perfectly fitted cashmere sweater in her fashion arsenal. Vaughan pairs a sumptuous camel one by Equipment (pictured above) with dark blue Theory trousers for a scene in which Schnitzer says the character had to be able to move around with ease–and move through a series of rapidly changing circumstances. “She couldn’t really wear a dress or skirt” for this particular sequence, according to Schnitzer.

In an all-important flashback scene, however, Enos is able to show off one of her character’s signature minidresses. Schnitzer chose this long-sleeve, Nili Lotan frock with giraffe-like spots because she “wanted something more playful than what Alice actually wears to work” for this flirty, intimate scene with co-star Peter Krause. Hmm, a flashback always hints at something juicy!

In real life, Enos boasts a double black belt in Taekwondo and is “very agile and very physical,” says Schnitzer. “She can move, and that girl can run in heels–it’s pretty amazing!” For an all-around outfit that would take her from day to night, and straight into the action, Schnitzer paired a black lace Dolce & Gabbana pencil skirt with a skin tight black turtleneck from Club Monaco, and a pair of knee-high boots from Via Spiga. It’s a formula (pencil skirts + tight sweaters or blouses) that works well on Enos’s body and “bridges the gap of old fashioned with modern,” Schnitzer says.

What else can you expect from tonight’s pivotal episode? One thing is certain: much more fashion. Look out for two important scenes with bold numbers. A long-sleeve cream Givenchy dress with a V-neck and cinched waist will solidify Vaughan’s girl boss status when she makes an unforgettable entrance into her office. And, a cranberry Dolce & Gabbana pencil skirt with a blush-colored button down blouse pops when Vaughan needs to stand out in a downtown crowd. “It looks amazing out in the open with the trees and the buildings,” Schnitzer says. “All you see is her.”
